Flutist & Educator
Dr. Ellen C. Johnson is currently the Chair of the Career and Artistic Development Committee for the National Flute Association and Associate Principal Flutist in the Delano Chamber Orchestra in Wichita, KS. She serves on the music faculty at Butler Community College in El Dorado, KS and on the board of the George B. Tack Memorial Flute Committee as well. A versatile performer and leader, she has established a successful career as a soloist, teacher, chamber musician, improviser, and community leader. Dr. Johnson previously taught at Concordia University in Austin, TX and served as President of the Austin Flute Club. She holds degrees from Florida State University (D.M.), the University of Texas at Austin (M.M.) and Wichita State University (B.M.).
Throughout the year Dr. Johnson performs across the United States with the Delano Chamber Orchestra, Kansas City Baroque Consortium, Traverso Colore Baroque, and the Jack Korbel Confluence. Schools that have welcomed her as a Guest Artist/Clinician include Emporia State University, Stephen F. Austin State University, Kansas State University, and the University of Texas at Austin. In the 2010-2011 season she toured extensively with Traverso Colore, giving baroque flute recitals on period instruments at Belmont University, the Florida Flute Fair, Florida State University, Middle Tennessee State University, and Stetson University as well.
Community Engagement and Outreach opportunities have inspired Dr. Johnson to serve in a variety of settings. She is the founding Director of the Concordia Community Music Academy, Board Member of the George B. Tack Flute Committee, Former President of the Austin Flute Club, and Recipient of the College Music Society's Community Engagement Seed Grant. Her work in developing the Summer Flute Ensemble Initiative – a two-week program bringing chamber ensemble opportunities to young flutists - has served as an outreach model for music programs seeking to bridge the gap between higher education and local communities. She has also volunteered with non-profit music organizations and collaborated on events benefiting organizations as diverse as Be Kind to Cyclists, HopeArts, Symphony of the Soul, and Wheelchairs for Iraqi Kids.
As a contemporary music enthusiast, she has also premiered works by Robert Raines and Rob Deemer at the National Flute Convention in 2008 and led the Flute Association at Florida State University to commission Deemer's flute ensemble work, A Cadmium Moon Under a Pthalo Sky, which he dedicated to her.
Dr. Johnson's doctoral treatise, Flute Performance Practice in the United States (1870-1900): An Exploration of the Repertoire and Writings of American Flutists Sidney Lanier and Henry Clay Wysham, has been made available online by Florida State University. Her flute teachers include Eva Amsler, Marianne Gedigian, Karl Kraber, and Frances Shelly. She has also studied music composition with Katherine Murdock and jazz improvisation with Dennis Wilson.
